Dr Genevieve Grant from Monash University in Melbourne presented her research findings to a meeting of interested practitioners and insurers at a meeting sponsored by Hobart Occupational Medicine last night.
Dr Grant’s research looked at the outcomes for people injured who had required hospital admission and found that measures of self-reported stress were associated with worse outcomes, even when pre-existing vulnerability to stress was taken into account.
At the meeting the importance of provision of basic information about workers compensation to claimants was discussed. Worker Assist, funded by WorkCover, is an important resource for injured workers. Raising awareness of this service was seen as one important aspect of reducing the stress associated with the workers compensation system.
