It’s a Friday Newsletter this week again!
WorkCover Tasmania
Medical Advisory Panel
The fourth meeting of the WorkCover Medical Advisory Panel was held on 07 October 2019.
The discussion paper about issues relating to implementation of the IME Guidelines and the flyer about training and support for occupational and environmental medicine trainees was made available to WorkCover.
I understand that any issues for consideration by the Medical Advisory Panel raised by the Medical Profession can be sent to Panel Chair, Dr Walters, for his consideration. I expect the next meeting of the Panel will be held in early 2020.
OMIT Meeting and Inaugural Dinner – Friday 08 November in Launceston
The AFOEM committee met yesterday to plan events in conjunction with the RACP Tasmanian Physician Conference to be held in Launceston on Friday 08 November 2019. The plan is that we will hold a meeting after the formal conference is finished and follow our own meeting with dinner. Andreas (now back from overseas) and Barry will advise further once the details of the RACP Conference are known.
Important discussion items will include how the specialist occupational medicine practices in Tasmania can best support training for AFOEM trainees and how we can promote a quality IME assessment process for Tasmania. The meeting and dinner will also be an excellent opportunity for practitioners interested in this field to get to know each other.
Practice Tip – Adverse Occurrence Reporting
I have found it useful to formally document adverse occurrences affecting patients being treated through my practice. Luckily there haven’t been as many recently as there were when I first started reporting. With the worker’s consent, the report provides the treating doctor’s perspective on any adverse occurrence to a range of stakeholders. Any occurrence that affects recovery and rehabilitation can be recorded and can assist all parties understanding and contribute to future preventive action without the need for a formal complaint. I usually send copies to WorkCover as well.

Barry has alerted us that the ANZSOM (Australian and New Zealand Society of Occupational Medicine) are running their national conference in Launceston next year from 19-22 March 2020. I am told that there will be a maritime theme. The programme hasn’t been released yet, but I will provide details once they are to hand.
ANZSOM are also hosting ICOH 2021 in Melbourne.
I am still seeking contributions for future newsletters. I understand Carlin White will provide his experience in becoming a trainee for a future Newsletter.
